The work of Cyclotron AIC-144 has become research and development. Reducing the demand for a proton beam has contributed to significant advances in the modernization of the device. The presented report describes the current state of the Cyclotron and summarizes the work that has recently been done in the Cyclotron AIC-144 Department. Work on improvement of the proton beam parameters has been carried out since 2004. The recent upgrading involved the RF generator, control system of correction coils, the vacuum system and ion source. Technical inspection in October 2013 confirmed the effectiveness of the adopted modification. Despite many years of service Cyclotron is in a good operating condition. It is currently used in proton radiotherapy ocular melanoma. This report presents the current state of the cyclotron and presents the work that was done in 2014. The report describes the distillate flow control module in the primary cooling circuit cyclotron AIC-144, cooling system, temperature measurement system and quality management system. The report pays particular attention to the issue of innovation, complexity and precision of action components. To ensure a steady state operation of the cyclotron systems ensure the stability of the temperature of the distillate. From 2012 on cyclotron AIC-144 is carried out proton therapy of eye tumors cooperation with the Jagiellonian University Hospital. Improvement of RF system reliability at dee voltage of 60 kV and frequency of 26.26 MHz as well as precise shaping of the cyclotron magnetic field made it possible to accelerate the proton beam up to 60.5 MeV and to provide its extraction with overall efficiency ~35%. The actual status is described and possible solution offered. The core of the new safety system is Siemens Simatic S7-200 PLC which delivers satisfactory quantity of I/Os and also allows further development by ie. implementing Ethernet communication and control over the remote program. First part described the optimization of energy and shapes the protons beam, which was made by the specialist from Joint Institute Nuclear Research in Dubna. The result of they work, was successful the energy of proton increased to 59 MeV and shape of the beam decreased. Second part described the renovation of ratio frequency generator. The first part of the article describes suppression of residual fumes inside the cyclotron chamber. In order to attain this new vacuum configuration turbomolecular pumps have been installed and the ion source has been supplied with hydrogen of high purity. The result was: better stability of the proton beam, increase of deflection coefficient and ion source life-span. Second part describes the system of control and power supply of transport ion beam to the therapy post. Next there is a description of the system which counteracts the mechanical stress in the cyclotron chamber. The both enterprises improve operational reliability, reduce downtime, increase comfort of service. The non-standard requirements of the protons beam parameters for therapy, forced screw of the machine to do adaptation and improvement of the cyclotron systems. The last few years was dedicated to exchange the old systems to the new like: vacuum system, main magnet power supply, RF system, beam line system, beam line powers supplies. That work allowed doing the tests on the proton beam in treatment room. During tests the problems of protons beam stability of current and repeatability of protons beam of parameters has bean notice. Two themes have been presented in following article: the stability of the protons beam current in short time period; the repeatability of the protons beam parameters in long time period. Several factors can affect stability of current of protons beam. The most important are: work of ion source, long time of thermal stabilization of cyclotrons elements, variable of network of power supply. In this application, the essential parameter is the stability of the proton beam current. The paper describes the relationship between the stability of the proton beam current and temperature of the cooling water supplied to various cyclotron parts which shape the beam. We noticed the dependence on the temperature itself and on the temperature gradient. Kierunek prowadzenia wiązki ustawiono precyzyjnie wykorzystując niwelator oraz samopoziomujący się laser 3D. Wymieniono soczewki kwadrupolowe, a nowe ustawiono precyzyjnie względem osi wiązki. Wykonano szereg kolimatorów i uchwytów oraz podstawę do pozycjonowania kamery CCD na ławie optycznej. Stworzono procedurę wyprowadzania wiązki z wykorzystaniem tarcz pokrytych siarczkiem cynku ZnS(Ag) wraz z systemem kamer podglądu oraz zbudowanej w IFJ PAN kamery CCD. Wykorzystano kamerę CCD do obrazowania kształtu nierozproszonej oraz rozproszonej wiązki protonowej. Sprawdzono powtarzalność wyprowadzania wiązki oraz zoptymalizowano kształt wiązki. Za pomocą puszki Faraday’a zmierzono stosunek prądu rozproszonej i zogniskowanej wiązki na stanowisku pomiarowym do prądu ekstrakcji z cyklotronu. Wykonano po miary dozymetryczne (mocy dawki) promieniowania gamma oraz neutronowego wewnątrz i wokół hali eksperymentalnej dla prądów ekstrakcji cyklotronu do wartości 100 nA.Item Symetryzacja pola magnetycznego cyklotronu AIC-144(Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences, 2011) Daniel, Krzysztof; Cieślik, Robert; Grzybek, Ryszard; Guguła, Konrad; Janik, Grzegorz; Koczot, Andrzej; Molęda, Janusz; Norys, Tadeusz; Pyzioł, Wojciech; Ruszel, Marek; Sałach, Bogusław; Sroka, Artur; Sulikowski, Jacek; Tarczoń, RyszardThe cyclotron AIC-144, currently used in proton radiotherapy of eye melanoma, is located in the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Cracow. The efficiency of protons deflection of this cyclotron, after elements of pole tip were precisely installed therein in 2006, amounted to 10%. Several months later micromoves of pole tip elements and decline of effectiveness of proton beams deflection were observed. Attempts to restore previous state led to partial success. The efficiency of deflection was still much lower than the one obtained in 2006 and amounted to 3%. The aim of this paper is to verify the hypothesis about deterioration of magnetic field symmetry in the area of acceleration and to correct the field by introducing micromoves into pole tip elements, under control of magnetic field mapping. The survey has confirmed significant asymmetry in the magnetic field within the acceleration area. After precise correction of the position of pole tip elements essential symmetry improvement was achieved. The correction was successful and after activating the cyclotron the efficiency of deflection reached 12%.Item Upgrade of the equipment for production of gallium isotopes from proton - activated zinc targets(Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences, 2014) Ochab, Ewa; Petelenz, Barbara; Szałkowski, Mirosław; Ruszel, Marek; Sroka, Artur; Bogdali, PawełTwo gallium isotopes, 66Ga (T1/2=9.4h, β+ 4.2MeV) and 67Ga (T1/2=78h, EC), can serve as good models in development of new 68Ga-labelled (T1/2=68m, β+ 1.9MeV) PET radiopharmaceuticals. In order to produce 66Ga and/or 67Ga from zinc targets activated in a medical cyclotron, we designed a prototype target whose external dimensions match the geometry of other standard targets, but which contains modified internal parts. Besides, we equipped our old apparatus for solvent extraction of 67Ga in new, remotely controlled, electric valves. Performance of the upgraded chemical apparatus turned out good and the gas- and water-tightness of the new target at room temperature were satisfactory too. Performance of the new target in the transport lines of the PETtrace cyclotron as well as its behavior in harsh thermal conditions have to be the matter of future experiments.
